Definition and Examples of Modality in Grammar

In grammar and semantics, modality refers to linguistic devices that indicate the degree to which an observation is possible, probable, likely, certain, permitted, or prohibited. In English, these notions are commonly (though not exclusively) expressed by modal auxiliaries, such as can, might, should, and will. They are sometimes combined with not. Martin J. Endley suggests that the simplest way to explain  modality  is  to say that it has to do with the stance the speaker adopts toward some situation expressed in an utterance...[M]odality reflects the speakers attitude toward the situation being described (Linguistic Perspectives on English Grammar, 2010). Deborah Cameron illustrates with an example: [Modality] is what makes the difference between a factual assertion like  unicorns never existed, and a more guarded view, such as  it seems unlikely that unicorns could ever have existed—or a bolder claim like  the existence of unicorns must always have been a myth.  Modality, then, is a resource  speakers  and writers use when they are staking claims to knowledge: it allows them to formulate different kinds of claims (e.g., assertions, opinions, hypotheses, speculations) and indicate how committed they are to those claims. (The Teachers Guide to Grammar, Oxford University Press, 2007) Indicating Modality Grammatically Just as tense indicates a time aspect of a verb, words that are used to show modality indicate the mood of the sentence—that is, how factual or assertive the statement is—and it can be done in any number of ways, including with adjectives. Martin J. Endley in Linguistic Perspectives on English Grammar  explains: Thus, a situation might be described as  possible, probable, necessary, or  certain. The  noun  counterparts of these adjectives also express modality so that a situation can be described as a  possibility, a  probability, a  necessity, or a  certainty. Moreover, it is possible to use ordinary  lexical verbs  to convey modality....And think  about the difference between saying that you  know  something and saying that you  believe  something. Such differences are essentially a matter of modality. Finally, English also contains certain semi-fixed lexical phrases (e.g.,  rumor has it) that are, basically, modal expressions.  (IAP, 2010) Other terms that express modality are marginal modals, such as need, ought to, dare, or used to. In Depth: Types of Modality The range of possibilities expressed when using modality is a broad spectrum, ranging from not very likely to very likely; to express these different levels, modality comes with named gradations, as explained by authors  Gà ¼nter Radden and Renà © Dirven, in Cognitive English Grammar:   Modality is concerned with the speakers assessment of, or attitude towards, the potentiality of a state of affairs. Modality, therefore, relates to different worlds. Assessments of potentiality, as in You must be right, relate to the world of knowledge and reasoning. This type of modality is known as epistemic modality. Modal attitudes apply to the world of things and social interaction. This type of modality is known as root modality. Root modality comprises three subtypes: deontic modality, intrinsic modality and disposition modality. Deontic modality is concerned with the speakers directive attitude towards an action to be carried out, as in the obligation You must go now. Intrinsic modality is concerned with potentialities arising from intrinsic qualities of a thing or circumstances, as in The meeting can be canceled, i.e. it is possible for the meeting to be canceled. Disposition modality is concerned with a things or a persons intrinsic potential of being actualised; in particu lar abilities. Thus, when you have the ability to play the guitar you will potentially do so....Modal verbs have a special status among modal expressions: they ground a situation in potential reality. The Learning Styles For Adult Learners - 2017 Words

As an adult learner, it is important to learn about some of the academic concepts in learning styles to help with life situations possibly or to learn the best way to handle other people. In this paper, there will be three academic concepts discussed for adult learners that might be useful for everyday life. The first concept that will be discussed is the Kolb learning style. There is diverging style, assimilating style, and converging style in the Kolb learning style. This will be further discussed in details later on in the paper. This learning style is useful for adults to learn their own way of learning. The second academic concept that will be discussed is the Johari Window. There are four windows in the Johari learning style that will be discussed later. The four windows are Open/Free Area, Blind Area, Hidden Area, and the Unknown Area. The Johari Window is important for a person to understand themselves and others. This is also important for a person to figure out things they might not know about themselves to help them become a person possibly. All this will be further discussed later on in the paper. Psychosocial Impact of Depression in Chronic Illness

Question: Discuss about the Psychosocial Impact of Depression in Chronic Illness. Answer: Introduction: In this article, Nabi et al., (2011) described a research study, which aimed to examine the trajectories of depressive episodes, and the hypertension probabilities that are associated with the trajectories over a period. The authors used a longitudinal study data taken from the Whitehall II study to examine the socioeconomic gradient among the civil servants. The authors gathered data regarding the prevalence of depressive episodes, trajectory group and risk of hypertension among the 35-55-year-old civil servants in 20 London based departments through questionnaire and clinical examination. The key findings of the study are that the risk of hypertension increases with age more rapidly among the participants who experienced more episodes of depression as compared to the low level of episodes of depression. This study suggests that the psychological distress has an impact on the physiological effects. Depression is manifested as a complication due to the prevalence of chronic diseases having a cause and effect relationship that limits the mobility and independence. The main limitation of the research was that the respondents who did not include the unemployed and blue-collar workers which limited the general population representation. The depressive symptoms associated with hypertension included the cognitive manifestations. In the article, Nahon et al., (2010) describe a research to study the psychological and socioeconomic factors that have an impact on the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) regarding the risk factors adhered to the treatment. The aim of the authors was to analyse the characteristics of IBD associated with depression and anxiety. The authors conducted a two-step online survey on Association Francois Aupetit, the French IBD patients association through questionnaire from December 2008 to June 2009. In the second step, 4000 patients were provided with the questionnaire including the goals of the study mentioned in the survey. The results showed that among all the participants, 181 patients were highly depressed and 689 patients were anxious associated with the severity, flares and non-adherence to treatment. This large cohort study shows that there is a high prevalence of depression and anxiety among the IBD patients. There is social exclusion among the people who are suffering from chroni c diseases as it affects their quality of life. The limitation of the research is that the study is conducted in a selected population of the patients who belong to the IBD French association. Therefore, the results obtained cannot be generalized to the completely French population of IBD patients. In the article, Pouwer et al., (2011) describe a study to show the co morbid depression prevailing in the patients with chronic illness like type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Also, the research also studied the effectiveness of web-based cognitive behavioural therapy for the patients with depression and emotional distress. A randomized, controlled trial was conducted in Netherland among 255 adult diabetic patients who had elevated symptoms of depression. The primary outcomes of the research were the symptoms of depression and the emotional distress was the secondary outcomes associated with diabetes and glycemic control. The results showed that depression and emotional distress prevails among the patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes. The results also depicted that there were clinical improvement and reduction of anxiety and emotional distress after the one month follow up of CBT. The rigors to diabetic management are stressful and affect their daily activities leading to depression and poor quality of life. The limitations of the study are that the web based CBT intervention is not accessible for the elderly population and the one-month follow-up was small to access the effectiveness of the intervention. The results of the above studies show that there is a prevalence of depression, anxiety and emotional distress among the patients suffering from chronic illness. The chronic diseases like inflammatory bowel diseases, diabetes and hypertension have a detrimental effect on the patients life. It hampers the quality of life of the patients living with the disease and poses a risk for psychosocial distress. Apart from affecting the body systems, these chronic diseases intensify pain and isolate the people suffering from chronic illness. All these factors shape the experiences of the patients suffering from chronic diseases and enable the nurses to engage in the assessment and in providing holistic approaches to nursing practice. The psychological interventions like cognitive behavioral therapy are effective in reducing the patient associated depression and emotional distress related to the chronic diseases. The implications for nursing practice involve the screening of the anxiety and depression, providing psychosocial support, self-management interventions and by providing appropriate professional support. It is important to improve the recognition rates that are imperative for the nurses in providing the appropriate psychosocial support to the patients with chronic illness. The holistic nursing practices include the prompt diagnosis of the level of depression and understanding and knowledge of the basic aspects of the problem. There is also a requirement of non-pharmacological techniques that helps the patient to cope up with anxiety and make the patient reciprocate. In nursing practice, there is also a requirement of interventions that helps the patient to manage anxiety and depression through verbal and non-verbal communication. The coping strategies and interventions adopted by the patients can also be helpful for the patients suffering from chronic disease-related depression and anxiety. Apart from cognitive behavioral therapies, psychosocial interventions (PSI) like educational theories also provide support to the patients suffering from chronic disease-related depression. The holistic nursing practice should inculcate interventions that assume the complex interplay between the environmental, biological and sociological factors and the ambient depression that prevails in the chronic illness. A team-based collaborative approach for the patients with chronic illness where the nurses and the healthcare professionals should provide patient-centered care model that ensures satisfaction, improved functioning and better quality of life. The engagement and assessment of the outcome, familys assessment and support, psychosocial management that includes coping strategy enhancement, training in problem solving and approaches to self-management and techniques like motivational interviewing with medication management are some of the PSIs in nursing practice. The biggest influence towards shaping my aspirations has been my dad, especially how he has run his distribution business, and managed to keep our family in healthy condition. Learning at a young age that a father is the leader of the family, my curiosity of how leadership is conducted started from observing my father make important decision, not leaving us out when making such decisions. All his decisions were inclined towards making us happy. This inspired me to be a leader some day. When I grew older, my dad would take me to his business where I was fascinated by the use of computers, and other office equipment. Soon my dad bought me a computer that I still hold dear to even today despite being outdated. At his business, I saw more of my father making decisions and inspiring workers in a meeting through imparting new knowledge about logistics in them. I realized he was respected, and this drove me further to become a leader. More so, his concern for his workers has always been high and respects each of them. In addition, there was free communication across his business where all workers at all levels interacted and anybody could report to him incase any thing is needed. I have learned so much from my father’s role as the boss of his business. However, recently I learned a hard lesson, which I must say has further taught me that leadership is not just about being good to everybody. Some people may be out to see one down, and if one wilts to their pressure, as a leader one will have failed. This was in a teamwork where I was the leader in a school project and several decisions had to be made. As the leader, I was supposed to take the best decisions according to my knowledge, since I would be accountable. However, one of the team members was quite against the decision I intended to take towards the project, and from much pressure and swearing to quite, a wilted. Our project was last, and at the presentation stage, I had to bear the shame of explaining why our performance was so poor. I learned that sometimes a leader has to stand on his ground amidst pressure. This, I must say made me a stronger leader. Considering I am still a high school student, I with only the Spring Semester remaining before I can achieve my vision. However, I have been under the leadership of many leaders that have taught me many skills in leadership. For instance before high School, I held a position in the Coast Guard for 5 years. Now I am sure that I have leadership skills through the experiences I have had such as leading the class in many decisions without having any authority form teachers, and during times when I am a team leader, which has happened to me several times, when my peers choose me as their leader. Each year about five million dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, monkeys, and other animals die in lethal dose tests performed in many states around the United States. During a lethal dose test, the experimental substance is forced into the animals throats, or is pumped into their stomaches by a tube sometimes causing death by stomach rupture or from the sheer bulk of a chemical dosage. Substances are mixed in lab chows, injected under the skin, into a vein, or into the lining of the abdomen, they are often applied to the eyes, rectum, and vagina or forcebilly inhaled through a gas mask. It can be sometimes a force-fed chemical , that has chemicals applied to bare skin that has had the fur removed painfully and inhale fumes. Experimenters observe the animals reaction which include convulsions, labored breathing, diarrhea, constipation, skin eruptions, abnormal animals will die from this experiment 2 to 3 weeks later. The experiments a re performed in a lab where all the proper chemicals are set up to test the products and make sure they are safe for consumers. All this is done just so people can wear that fur coat or makeup. Does the consumers think about the poor animals who died just so they can wear them items. This issue is created when companies test their products on innocent animals. The company tests on animals making sure the chemicals in products are safe for consumers, but do they think about the sake of animals? What makes this issue worse is the companies want to make their products perfect, and people who care about animals want it to be banned. To me the things that stood out the most studying them were their exceptional ways to brain wash people, being unethical in almost all there ways yet through it all what they both wanted the most was to rule over their country making it better and stronger while getting rid of anything or anyone who stood in their way.
